Rainbow Connection

Our daughter Justine Amber Jao was born on May 17, 2013. When she was born she had some issues with her oxygen dipping below acceptable levels so we was admitted to the NICU at the hospital my wife gave birth. She was put in an incubator to make sure her oxygen levels stabilized but then she started having frequent seizures – as many as 2-3 an hour. In addition to the seizures she developed a breathing condition called stridor that has made it difficult for her to breathe and eat. We were transferred to Lurie’s Children Hospital in Chicago where they have been testing and monitoring her.

Everyday I sing “Rainbow Connection” to her in the hospital. When the muppets movie came out last year and I was reintroduced to that song, I wanted my daughter to hear it and share the same memories I have had with that song. To me it is a song about discovering life. Regardless of what people have told you about their lives, this is your own life and you have to make your mistakes, fall in love, break a bone, run a race, and everything else in between to truly experience life. That is what I want for our daughter.

My niece Chloe has not been able to meet her cousin yet because she is too young to go into the NICU in the hospital. She is constantly posting on her instagram page about how much she loves her and she now she cannot wait to meet her. Since Chloe has not had a chance to meet Justine yet, she made a video of herself singing “Rainbow Connection” for us to show to Justine. This got me thinking…

It would be great to have all the people who have been thinking and praying for Justine to sing for her also. So here is my request to you:

Record a video of yourself singing the song or part of the song “Rainbow Connection” and you can either send it to me via email at joey@deekin.net or just post it on YouTube under the title Rainbow Connection for Justine. I will play all of the versions for Justine to hear your beautiful voices. I would love it if this was the song we all used to get Justine home to start living the life she was meant to live.

If you post on social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr), please use the hashtag #comehomejustine so we can see all of your messages! Thanks again so much!

Why are there so many songs about rainbows?
And what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.
Who said that every wish would be heard
and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it’s done so far.
What’s so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell. We know that it’s probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors.
The voice might be one and the same.
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It’s something that I’m supposed to be.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers, and me
